Research funding calls: timescales & processes
One of CONNECTED’s key objectives is enabling members to successfully apply for research funding.
To achieve this, we are providing pump-prime funding for a wide range of innovative, short-term research projects which can be used as the basis for future funding applications with national and international funding organisations.
Pump-prime funding awards will focus on five priority areas:
• control strategies
• vector biology
• new diseases
• vector/virus interactions
• diagnostics/surveillance/forecasting.
We are particularly keen to encourage applications from
• early career researchers – scientists who have received their highest degree (BSc, MSc or PhD) within the last seven years.
• researchers resident in an African Low and/or Middle Income Country (LMIC) on the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list.
How many grant calls will CONNECTED make?
There will be two pump-priming grant calls within the three years of the CONNECTED project’s duration.
How will I know when grant calls are open?
Deadlines will be advertised on the CONNECTED website.

How much will I be able to apply for?
Grants will be made available for pump-prime projects of up to £30,000 (at 100% FEC), via competitive application to the Network Management Board.
Some larger projects of up to £90,000 (at 100% FEC), which should run for a maximum of 12 months, may also be awarded.
For how long should the research run?
Projects should run for a maximum of six months, and should lead to relevant and useful data for this field, or produce pilot data that will lead to a larger grant application to national or international funders.
A note about project application eligibility
• Projects must include CONNECTED network members from at least two different Institutes.
• Industrial partners cannot receive pump-priming funding from CONNECTED. However, industrial partners can be involved in pump-priming projects as collaborators or if they are providing cash or in-kind contributions.
Publication of summaries and narrative final reports
Projects which successfully receive funding awards, their public summaries and narrative final reports, will be included in CONNECTED network outcomes and publicity.
